Takes a lickin’

Summer’s coming. I know it by the tell-tale increase in temperature, here in Houston, from the low 90s to the mid 90s. Summer, you see, makes me think of ice cream. There’s little better than sitting on a front porch, legs dangling, barefoot, swirling your tongue around a disappearing tower of goodness.

Half the fun of eating ice cream is trying to finish it before it melts. I have a strategy. Let’s take a cone of my favorite, cool mint chocolate chip. I will lick all around the outside, slowly narrowing the sides of the ice cream back until none hangs over the cone’s edge. Then, I begin making trenches around the rim of the cone. Finally, wholesale eating commences.

I firmly believe Satan has a similar strategy for our lives. Trials = licks. Tribulations = licks. Belittling licks. Demeaning licks. Taunting licks. Tempting licks. Angry licks. Envious licks. Deceitful licks. Demoralizing licks, lick, lick, lick away at our good character. He makes headway with quick little licks, then starts making trenches. Finally, we’re so far separated from the boundary of the cone, he can just lap us up.

Growing up, my pastor used to say “Don’t let the Devil lick the sweet off your candy.” I’m going to go ahead and say, Don’t let him lick the sweet off your ice cream.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39

I’m not letting the author of confusion have any part of me.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? What homemade axioms help you when the going gets rough?

  1. I love the way you put this! πŸ™‚ Now you made me want to go to Marble Slab or DQ and pick up an ice cream!

  2. Love mint chip! Cool, chocolaty goodness. I also like coconut – and peanut butter n’ chocolate.

I like the stance you take, Herdy!

  3. So you’re saying when I sin, I’m pretty much making out with Satan?

  4. Avacado Icecream!

    My favorite. πŸ™‚

  5. You had me at lick! πŸ™‚

My favorite flavor ice cream is rum and raisin. I can lick the rum like no other.

  6. I also adore Mint Chocolate Chip, but that looks much more like guacamole up there in that picture (figures you would have something green). Unfortunately, I don’t do much dessert-eating unless I’m with other people, though. Hence why I made it through last summer without having even one snoball. Thankfully I rectified that early on this summer.

    • the one pictured is actually green tea ice cream, but it was green, so, you know.

snoball – is that like a sno-cone? I love those. I’ll take Tiger Blood, please πŸ˜‰

      • snoball is the south Louisiana word for sno-cone, kinda like how they call a median a “neutral ground” and an inspection sticker is a “brake tag.” Snoballs, of course, have variations I haven’t seen in sno-cones, such as condensed milk. Makes it feel less like chewing on ice.

Would you like some Adonis DNA to go with your Tiger Blood for only 25c more?

      • we have a place in the next town over from where I grew up that does the condensed milk too — it’s yummy.

Go ahead and upgrade me to the Adonis DNA. Duh WINNING!

  7. Argh, now I’m craving ice cream. Thanks a lot…. 😦

My favorite flavor is chocolate chip cookie dough. Blue Bell came out with a key lime pie flavor a couple of years ago that was also quite delicious. I may or may not have eaten the entire half-gallon over a span of about 24 hours….

    • Blue Bell is the bestestest. I have to make the trip to Brenham every year for a creamery tour. I can put away a half-gallon of Pecan Pralines and Cream by myself. no problem

  8. Interesting analogy! My all-time fave ice cream is chocolate peanut butter. My new love is Ben and Jerry’s Red Velvet Cake. There are no words for how it has changed my life:)

  9. I love mint chocolate chip, too. Maple walnut is another favourite.

  10. Pistachio Almond…mmmmm……oh and Yes, it’s getting hot down here in Houston!!!!

    • ew, sorry. I cannot get on board with your pistachio almond love, here.

      • Lol! The way you feel about my flava is how I feel about Mint chocolate chip…everyone I know loves it…for the life of me…i don’t know why?…i’ve tried it…and….in your words…ew.

  11. Mint Chocolate Chip has been a staple at every girl’s night I’ve had with my sister and cousins since we were young teenagers. Thanks a lot, now I’m craving ice cream AND a girl’s night. πŸ™‚

  12. Love it.

April tells me to put my big girl panties on. I don’t really wear panties, but that’s what she says. πŸ™‚

  13. I’m a Mint Chocolate Chip kinda guy myself. Or just plain Chocolate Chip. Or Moose Tracks. Or Peanut Butter Cup. Or Neopolitan. Or Chocolate. Or….

Let’s just say I like Ice Cream.

  14. I’m a Rocky Road guy since that is what will be served each day in Heaven. As for axioms–When the going gets tough, the tough curl up into the fetal position and cry.
    Wait–that’s not right. Hmmm.

  15. We have an ice cream chain here in ATL (not sure what other states they’re in) called Brusters. They have two amazing flavors: Key Lime Pie and Deep Dish Apple Pie. They pretty much have Key Lime all year long, but DDAP comes available like once a year (in the fall) – it is to die for.

  16. About the only ice cream I’d turn down is Tiger Tail.
But that’s ok, my wife likes Tiger Tail.

  17. I was out to DQ tonight, got a cone (twist of chocolate and vanilla)…and this post was running through my mind, lol!
